The Ashtabula County Health Department reminds citizens to use precaution in minimizing their risks of contracting Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria carried by a black legged tick. If an infected tick bites a person, it can transmit Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease can result in arthritis if it is left untreated. To prevent Lyme Disease, residents should take several precautions:

If an infected tick bites a person, it can transmit Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease can result in arthritis if it is left untreated. To prevent Lyme Disease, residents should take several precautions:
- Be cautious when walking in tall grass, bushes, brush and woods as ticks thrive in these environments.
- By wearing light colored clothing in tick infested areas – you can see any ticks on you more easily.
- Wear a hat, long sleeved shirt and pants, tucked into socks, when walking in tick infested areas.
- Apply tick repellent to clothing according to directions on label of tick repellent.
